A winter storm named Helena that has killed at least six people in the west and south continued to spread havoc in the U.S. northeast on Sunday, according to the Weather Channel.
A car slid off an icy highway south of Asheboro in Montgomery County, leaving one dead and two others seriously injured, said North California Governor Roy Copper on Sunday morning, announcing the first death from this weekend's winter storm.
The winter storm has brought 19.5 inches of snow in East Bridgewater in Massachusetts, topping totals from last winter, said Jonathan Erdman, a senior meteorologist at Weather.com.
"Boston's Logan Airport picked up 7.2 inches of snow, heavier than any snowstorm last winter, heaviest since Winter Storm Neptune dumped 16.2 inches of snow, there, on February 14-15, 2015," he added.
The winter storm has caused dangerous driving conditions and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said during a news briefing that over 3,000 pieces of snow fighting equipment had been deployed on major roadways.
"We are talking about the potential for white-out conditions, close to zero visibility," Tom Tinlin, state highway director, told the AP.
Flights were also delayed or canceled across the country due to the storm.
