Former national security advisor Michael Flynn's false statements to the special counsel investigating whether President Donald Trump's campaign team colluded with Russia to sway the 2016 election "impeded" the probe, court documents show.

"Flynn's false statements and omissions impeded and otherwise had a material impact on the FBI's ongoing investigation into the existence of any links or coordination" between the campaign and Moscow, special counsel Robert Mueller said in a statement filed as Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.
