Takht Sharki.

A series of free Arabic concerts will take place at the Sharjah World Music Festival (SWMF) from January 12 to January 19.

These one-hour performances are scheduled nightly at Al Qasba and Al Majaz Waterfront, starting at 8.30pm.

Performers include Iraqi composer, guitarist and songwriter Saif Shaheen, who is known for his fusion of Eastern and Western melodies, as well as exploring themes of belonging and estrangement. Alwan, a band who sings both Arabic and Turkish music, will mix blues, jazz and their own original compositions.

Syrian musician Samer Abu Rasian joins the line-up with his group Arabesque Classics. Six-piece oriental act Takht Sharki will also perform, as well as Kurdish artist Ronahi, and musicians from the Furat Qaddouri Music Centre.

Organisers of SWMF recently announced a paid event featuring Hungarian violinist Katica Illenyi at Flag Island Amphitheatre on January 18. Illenyi, also a singer, dancer and Theremin player, will be joined by conductor Mohammad Othman Siddiq and the SWMF Orchestra.
