Russian President Vladimir Putin

The Syrian government and the opposition have agreed to a nationwide ceasefire from midnight local time on Thursday, followed by peace talks where Russia and Turkey, which back opposing sides in the bitter conflict, will act as guarantors.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the peace talks would be held in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, and attended by the Syrian government and opposition, adding that the deal includes an agreement between the Syrian government and the armed opposition on a ceasefire, measures for overseeing the ceasefire, and an agreement to start peace talks.

He further added that the deal is "fragile" and require continuous efforts, patience and communication between all partners in the region to be achieved.
