Cairo - Shima Mikkawi

Curtains are not just an accessory, interior designer Basim Abdul Aziz tells Arabstoday. Curtains are the barrier between your private boudoir and the busy, boisterous world outside. A well-chosen curtain can completely change the mood of your home. Take time choosing the right curtains for your home: it may make all the difference. "Match your curtains with the furnishings and décor of your home” Abdul Aziz advises. "Choosing a curtain for a room is the décor equivalent of choosing a husband for your daughter. Every room in your home has a different set of requirements from a curtain. The fabric, design and colour of the curtains must complement your furniture, your wallpaper or paint and the floor. When these three are balanced, the room is in perfect harmony. Here’s the scoop on top-class curtain choosing: 1. Choose the right fabric: Dark colours absorb light; bright colours reflect them. To keep out stifling sunlight, use a lighter shade. For kids’ bedrooms, stick to something neutral  that is easy to clean in, just in case your little ones decide to become Picasso and turn the curtains and walls into their blank canvas. In common rooms and reception areas, use luxury fabrics that reflect the nature of the place. Kitchens should be clothed in easy-wash, light fabrics that make it easy to keep cooking smells out. 2. Lighting: For sun-facing rooms, choose curtains that can reduce the oppressive sun rays. In the rooms that aren’t exposed to the sun, choose cooler colours like green, blue, white and turquoise. 3. Measure up: Make sure you measure the windows and walls perfectly before buying. Narrower curtains, with less folds will suit small windows.
