
The Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed El Tayyeb welcomed cooperation between Al Azhar and educational and cultural institutions in Indonesia.
During a meeting on Sunday with Elwi Abdul Rahman Shihab, the Special Envoy of the Indonesian President, the grand Imam expressed Al Azhar's readiness to receive more Indonesian students to study at Al Azhar to correct the misunderstanding about Islam that spread by extremist groups and confront terrorism.
For his part, the envoy praised the role of Al Azhar in the Muslim world especially in his country, expressing hope for a visit to Indonesia by the Grand Imam.
Shihab said in previous statements he loves Egypt and the Egyptians and that he has sweet memories back when he was studying at Al Azhar University.
In a press conference after a meeting with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Saturday, Shihab said he also was a fan of Zamalek football team.
Shihab handed over an invitation from President Joko Widodo to Sisi to attend celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Bandung Conference and the 10th anniversary of the new strategic partnership between Asian and African countries.
