Amman - Arab Today

Judicial reports issued by the ministry of Justice in Jordan for 2016 confirmed that, there has been a noticeable increase in judges’ number, whether men or women between 2009 and 2016, reaching 754 judges in 2009, and 970 judges in 2016.

Association of Women Solidarity Institute “Tadamoun” said that, women represented 18.5 of the judges, with 180 female judges, but no one of them reached the high Supreme Court. 2 judges in the private class, 3 in first class, 9 in second, 13 in third, 21 in forth, 96 in fifth and 36 judges in the sixth class.

“Tadamoun” praised the judicial institution role in creating equal opportunities for women to prove themselves among men, confirming that will have a positive effect on the number of fifth and sixth class judges, which will increase their number in the Jordanian judicial system in the next years. It added that the female judges are capable to hold responsibility and they have proven their sufficiency in judicial positions, especially in cases related to family and children.

Taghreed Hekmat was the first women appointed as judge in Jordan in 1996, when 5 lawyers were competing over the position and she won it, and became assistant of the Attorney General in human rights cases, then, she was moved to the Income Tax Court, after that, she was appointed as a judge in Grand Criminal Court.
