Kuwait - Arabstoday
Proposals to ban swimsuits, introducing the death penalty for blasphemy, imposing women to wear headscarves in public and removing flags from the Shiite cemetery in Sulaibikhat “to protect the sanctity of graves ” are controversial issues that were recently discussed and proposed by Islamist MPs in Kuwait. Okay, I need to understand something. Is Kuwait booming financially and Kuwaitis are living in heaven? Are their businesses flourishing and they have no debts to think of? Are they not facing any environmental crises and is their educational system so astonishing that MPs have absolutely nothing else to think of other than to suggest these laws? Seriously! I didn’t know that Kuwait is drug free, and children are living in such an extremely healthy environment that actually make the MPs think of these propositions. Now the hard truth. Kuwait is struggling and Kuwaitis are suffering! Struggling from a lack of construction industries, as they completely neglect the urge to build factories, plants or industrial units to introduce commercial growth to the country. New graduates are struggling to work and be able to give and contribute something to their country. Instead of focusing on whether they should ban swimsuits, when most of the population are expatriates, shouldn’t they focus on strengthening their infrastructure!? I usually do not like to compare countries, because I believe that every country has its own agenda and characteristics, but here I would like to take Saudi Arabia as an example. Considering it is a religious country, and it is true that women can’t drive there yet, but at least the country is starting to have a more open mindset. They are focusing on their infrastructure and they are progressing. My point here is that you don’t have to hide behind religion and distract people with holy religious edicts and ignore what your country needs. Sorry to say it, but some MPs are distracting people with their irrelevant ideas and proposals that lead to confuse people and cause friction between sects. Is their mission to kill the dreams of youths and push them to find comfort and education in other countries? Well, mission accomplished! Strengthen your educational system so students will not have to go abroad to study outside, and leave their families behind. Clean the environment from the 5 million tires that polluted the air two days ago, and come up with solutions to keep the tire yard in uninhabited areas. Instead of ordering the death penalty for blasphemy, try to fight it with education and peace because Islam is an enlightening, loving and peaceful religion. Do not try to distort it, and here I would like to give notice between brackets (Article 111 of the Penal Code prohibits defamation of religion, currently providing for up to one year’s imprisonment and a fine.  Under international law, ‘religious’ offences do not fall under the category of ‘most serious crimes’, the minimum threshold prescribed for crimes carrying the death penalty). Instead of taking the flags from the Shiite cemetery, respect their beliefs and let them weep their dead in their own way. And MPs, every time you think of swimsuits and removing flags from cemeteries try planting a tree or start putting one brick on top of another to build a factory for Kuwait’s sake and its future.
