Oscar-winning actress and Grammy-winning singer Jennifer Hudson is to make her Broadway debut in the musical The Color Purple, producers announced Friday.
Director John Doyle's critically acclaimed Menier Chocolate Factory production of The Color Purple is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker. It is scheduled to open on Broadway this fall. The staging premiered in London in the summer of 2013.
The Color Purple is co-produced by David Babani and Tom Siracusa for Chocolate Factory Productions. The show will play at a Shubert Theatre to be announced.
"With a fresh, joyous score of jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues, this stirring family chronicle follows the inspirational Celie, as she journeys from childhood through joy and despair, anguish and hope to discover the power of love and life," a news release said.
"So excited to make my Broadway debut this fall as Shug Avery in the revival of #TheColorPurple! @Oprah," Hudson tweeted.
