Leila Slimani
Rabat - Arab Today

Three months after French-Moroccan novelist Leila Slimani announced plans for a screen adaptation of her novel “Chanson Douce”, Le Journal du Dimanche has revealed that Maïwenn, the award-winning director for “Polisse” and “Mon Roi,” will be in charge of directing the film of Slimani’s best seller.

Slimani, the 2016 winner of Goncourt prize and most-read author in France in 2016, announced last December in a bookshop in Paris’ 20th arrondissement that her novel, “Chanson Douce,”  would be adapted to the screen, without giving the name of the director.

At the announcement event, she explained that she believed her writing would make more sense in the big screen, stating “I write in three dimensions. I see the scene. It is like a small theater in front of me, with the characters, their clothes and their actions.”

The film’s cast and date of release are yet to be disclosed to the public.

“Une Chanson Douce” traces the traumatic outcomes of a French workaholic married couple’s  decision to hire a nanny to look after their two young children.

The story is inspired by the personal experience of the author, who grew up with a nanny in Morocco and who hired one later, as well as a true story that took place in New York in 2012.
