Palestinian car-ramming attacker shot dead

Israel's army said a Palestinian man was shot dead near the West Bank city of Hebron on Tuesday after he lightly injured two soldiers in a car-ramming attack.

The incident took place at the entrance to Beit Einun, near the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba.

A Palestinian vehicle was speeding up toward an Israeli military station, lightly injuring two soldiers, according to a military statement.

"Forces fired shots toward the driver, and a hit was confirmed," the statement read.

The incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the region, sparked by new security measures Israel has adopted in Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, one of East Jerusalem's most sensitive holy sites.

The security devices, including metal detectors at the gates and CCTVs, were installed after a shooting attack that killed two policemen on Friday. The assailants, three Palestinian Arabs with Israeli citizenship, were later killed by the police.

On Monday night, Palestinians clashed with police in East Jerusalem for a second consecutive day. An unconfirmed number of people were injured and seven arrested, according to the police and local media.

The Waqf, a Muslim authority in charge of administrating the site, denounced Israel's new measures as a violation of the long-held status quo in the flashpoint site, which is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.
