Bahrain authorities on Monday questioned two members of the largest opposition group Al Wefaq National Islamic Society in connection with statements they allegedly made on social media.

The Interior Ministry's assistant under-secretary of legal affairs said they summoned the society's deputy secretary-general Khalil Marzooq and society member Abdulaziz Ibrahim.

He said they were being summoned in regard to statements released on Al Wefaq's website and social media that questioned procedures taken by the ministry and called for the interference of foreign organisations.

"This is considered to be a call for interference in the internal affairs of Bahrain," said the official.

"Such statements cause friction between various segments of society, promote unrest and sectarian tensions."

He said that the two Al Wefaq members were asked to stop issuing such statements, especially in light of the current regional situation.

The society's secretary general and top opposition leader Shaikh Ali Salman was jailed in 2015 for four years for spreading sectarianism and inciting others to break the law among other charges.

Salman's case will be heard on May 30 for a verdict.
