Cairo - Arab Today

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has stressed the big responsibility of men of the cloth to counter false fatwas that defame Islam.

In a meeting with a number of preachers and scholars from 50 countries Tuesday, Sisi said Islam is innocent from all the violent acts and crimes that are committed under its cover.

The scholars are now on a visit here to take part in an international conference on Fatwa.

The president stressed the need to enhance the role played by iftaa houses so that they become the only source of fatwas, presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said.

Only preachers should make fatwas, Sisi told his guests, noting that this would prevent societal divisions that threaten citizens' security and safety.

Muslims should be representative of their tolerant and moderate religion, the president stressed.
