At least five civilians were killed in clashes between rival militias around the main airport in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Sunday, dpa cited independent Libyan news site Al-Wasat as reporting.
At least 10 houses were completely burnt in the district of Qasr bin Ashir, in southern Tripoli, after intense shelling by rival militias,
which have been fighting for a week for control of Tripoli International Airport, according to the report.
Footage on local television showed a civilian plane, parked at the airport, in flames after being hit by a shell.
About 90 per cent of the airport buildings and aircraft parked on the tarmac have been damaged in the violence, prompting authorities to suspend flights.
