A total of nine people were killed and 16 others wounded in separate bombings and shootings in Iraq on Sunday, police sources said.
A car bomb exploded late Sunday near a funeral of Colonel Majid al-Fahdawi, commander of the 28th Iraqi Army Brigade, who was killed during the clashes with the militants to take control of the border area with Syria. A suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt blew himself up in eastern Ramadi, about 110 km west of Baghdad, leaving six killed and eight wounded.
In a separate incident, an Iraqi police officer was killed by unidentified gunmen in downtown Rawa, west of Anbar province.
Meanwhile, two members of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces were killed and eight others wounded when a roadside bomb exploded during their patrol south of Kirkuk, some 250 km north of Baghdad.
Iraq is witnessing some of its worst violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, a total of 8,868 Iraqis, including 7,818 civilians and civilian police personnel, were killed in 2013, the highest annual death toll in years.
