Enrico Macias, born Gaston Ghrenassia, will perform in Egypt’s Bibliotheca Alexandrina on Friday 10 February.

The French/Algerian singer came to fame in the 1960s when his family moved from Algeria to Paris.

Macias gained audiences’ hearts with music that carried Arab-Andalusian elements, first performing in cafes before making it to big stages of Paris, and soon after to the international scene.

By the 1970s, Macias had performed in Paris' Olympia, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and New York's Carnegie Hall, among other prestigious venues.

Among his most popular songs are the oriental flavoured J’ai quitté mon pays (I left my country), l'Oriental (The Oriental), Entre l'orient et l'occident (Between Orient and Occident), and Mon chanteur préferé (My prefered singer), among others.

Macias performs in French, Italian, Spanish, Hebrew, Turkish, Greek, English, Armenian, and Arabic.

Macias has visited Egypt on many occasions since 1970s, when he was invited by then-president Anwar El-Sadat to perform in Cairo.

He returned to Egypt several times throughout the years to perform in Cairo.

Tickets for Macias' concert at the Bibiotheca Alexandrina are priced EGP 350, EGP 550, EGP 700, EGP 850, and can be purchased at the Bibliotheca's ticketing office.
