Hossam Nour el-Din

In light of the recent violence in Egypt, the pressure continues to grow on striker Mohamed Aboutrika. The veteran, who made his name at al-Ahly has publicly supported the Muslim Brotherhood in the past, links which are now being strongly questioned by his fans and followers. I don't think its fair to criticise the footballer for his political beliefs. Aboutrika hasn't passed comment on the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, which has given his critics the chance to spread all sorts of false accusations about him. Some have suggested that he financially backed the Morsi supporters' sit-in in Rabaa al-Adawiya square, whilst others have circulated fabricated quotes in which he attacks the Egypt army and opposition political groups. If these people can criticise Aboutrika for his political views, then why don't they speak out when the likes of Mohamed Barakat and Hossam Ghaly support former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq?   The campaign against Aboutrika, one of the best Egyptian footballers in recent times, is nothing short of a disgrace. There is a need for Egyptians to come together now, to fight sedition and achieve serious reconciliation. Maybe those who are sharing photos of Aboutrika with Muslim Brotherhood figures should also publish pictures of him doing charity work, or scoring goals for the national team? He's a national hero. Give him a break. The views expressed by the author do not necessarily represent or reflect the editorial policy of Arabstoday.
