Malaysia's pineapple export earnings last year totaled RM161 million, Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) chairman Samsolbari Jamali said.
He said LPNM was projecting export earnings to reach RM254 million by 2020, according to Malaysia's (Bernama) News Agency.
Samsolbari said in achieving the target, the government had drawn up the National Agrofood Policy and targeted to expand the area for pineapple cultivation to 7,120 hectares by 2020.
"This policy is aimed at increasing the country's pineapple production to meet the market demand and the development of high-value agriculture," he said.
Samsolbari said the strengthening of the pineapple industry in Malaysia's Sarawak was necessary to help meet the global demand with an increase of 100 containers per month.
"LPNM is targeting to increase production to 45 tones per hectare by 2020," he added.
