The national coordinator of the Algerian Independent Union of Secondary and Technical Education Teachers, Meziane Meryan, revealed the most important points in the educational arena in Algeria, especially regarding the official exams, scheduled to be held in June.

Meryan said, in interview with Arabs Today, that the success rate for the 2017 baccalaureate exams will exceed 50%, given the current level of students and their status, as well as the level of topics to be presented in the official exam, although it will coincide with the month of fasting.

Regarding the possibility of repeating the scenario of the 2016 exams, which sparked a major political controversy, Meryan ruled out the issue of leaking the coming exams after the measures taken by the Algerian Minister of Education, Nouria Ben Gbritt.

"The most prominent of these measures is the tightening of security control on the centers of the exams, which will be subject to strict protection by the security and gendarmerie, and equipped with surveillance cameras, in parallel with the disruption of telephone lines and the Internet," he said.

On the issue of the pension law, which sparked a great debate in Algeria, Meziane Meryan explained that the trade union struggle is still ongoing and the independent trade union, which includes 13 syndicates from different sectors of the public service in Algeria, pointing out that they decided to organize a peaceful march in the eastern province of Bejaia, coinciding with Labor Day on 1 May.

Meryan revealed that a meeting is scheduled to be held in the next two days, to discuss the events of this march, which will be organized by workers to demand the withdrawal of the law of retirement.

The Algerian Labor Minister, Mohamed Ghazi, has strongly criticized the trade unions, saying that it defends the agenda of the International Monetary Fund, and work on the confusion of public opinion, noting that the movement is more political than in the interest of workers. Ghazi stressed that the draft law of retirement is irreversible and that the ministry will not retreat and will not be subject to the pressure of the unions that came out to protest in several sectors.
