Saudi Arabia after reported sightings of the new moon
Riyadh - Saeed Al Ghamedi

Sunday, June 25, is the first day of Eid Al-Fitr in Saudi Arabia after reported sightings of the new moon. The Supreme Court earlier called on Muslims in the kingdom to sight the crescent moon on Saturday evening.

United Arab Emirates also announced that Eid will be on Sunday. Astronomer Khalid Al-Zaaq, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences confirmed in his Twitter account that “Eid begins Sunday.

” He added that “the astronomical calculations based on followed criteria suggest that Sunday is first day of Eid Al-Fitr.” There have been reported sighting of the crescent moon in Malaysia and Indonesia, which would mean both countries will be celebrating Eid on Sunday.

Eid is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal.

The first day of Eid Al Fitr will be Sunday, June 25, officials from Qatar’s Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf) have just announced. Awqaf’s moon sighting committee met at their Dafna headquarters tonight to receive witness testimony and make their decision. The moon signifies the end of Ramadan and the start of the new month, which means that the Eid holidays officially begin tomorrow.

The moon-sighting committee in UAE has announced that Sunday will be the first day of the month of Shawwal and the first day of Eid Al Fitr.

The committee, headed by Sultan bin Saeed Al Badi, Minister of Justice, said that after a number of legitimate measures, as well as several contacts with neighbouring countries, it was established that Sunday will mark the beginning of Eid, the state news agency Wam reported.

Official Eid prayers in Abu Dhabi will take place at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which will be attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and his fellow royals, ministers and officials. The Crown Prince will receive Eid greetings at Al Mushrif Palace in the capital.

The Eid Al Fitr holiday for the public sector will conclude on Tuesday, with work resuming on Wednesday. The private sector will have the first two days of Eid off - Sunday and Monday - with work resuming on Tuesday.
