Karak attacks
Amman - ArabToday

Four unidentified gunmen were killed in Jordan's southern Karak city on Sunday night, after they launched a series of attacks and killed 10 people, including a Canadian tourist.

After a five-hour rescue operation, the police freed all the civilians trapped in the Karak Castle, a famous tourist site, where the terrorists took refugee, according to the government spokesperson Mohammad Momani.

Some 22 civilians and police officers were injured in total, according to a statement issued by Jordan's Public Security Department (PSD) on Sunday.

Momani told the local newspaper, The Jordan Times, on Monday that the Kingdom will remain resilient against attempts to disturb its stability and security, extending condolences to the Canadian government over the loss of a Canadian national.

The incident occurred when a police unit responded to a fire alert on Sunday in a house in Qatraneh to the north of Karak, said the PSD statement.

"Unidentified assailants fired at the officers, injuring two of them, then fled in a vehicle," it added.

Later they retreated to the castle, from where they fired at a police station.

Jordanian Prime Minister Hani al Mulki said so far there was no information on the attackers, describing them as "outlaws."
