The public education workers (primary, secondary, teacher training and university) are now on a 24-hour strike in the entire country, demanding a bigger education budget and higher salaries.

The strike is part of a cycle of demonstrations and protests on Thursday and June 21 approved by the Education Trade Unions Coordinating Office (CSEU), which will include the use of force.

The University Students Federation (FEUU) convoked to a march for Thursday, to cross the main avenue of Montevideo at 18:00 hours local time, and other organisations will join the march.

Claudio Arbesun, FEUU secretary for Trade Union Affairs, told reporters that the ruling party's electoral promises were not being kept.

The Uruguayan trade unions think that the budget must comprise a substantive increase to fulfil the electoral commitment to increase it to six percent of the Gross Domestic Product, plus one percent for research and development.
