Singapore Leaders Convey Condolences To Portugal On Forest Fires

Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam extended his condolences to his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on the loss of many lives and damage caused by the forest fires in central Portugal.

"On behalf of the people of Singapore, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to you and the Portuguese people," Tan said in a condolence letter made available to Bernama here.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragedy and their families.

I wish them strength and resolve to overcome their difficulties through this period of adversity," he said.

It was reported that more than 1,000 firefighters are battling the fire in the forested region around Pedrogoo Grande, north-east of the capital, Lisbon that has claimed the lives at least 64 people and injured more than 130 since Saturday.

The report said that many of the victims died after being trapped in cars as they tried to flee.

Meanwhile, in his condolence letter to his counterpart Antonio Costa, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he was saddened to learn of the devastating forest fires in central Portugal, which has resulted in the loss of many lives and widespread damage.

"On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and those affected by the disaster.

"Our thoughts are with the Portuguese people during this difficult time. We also pray for the safety of the rescue workers. I am confident that Portugal will overcome this disaster with fortitude," he said.
